Important Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Southampton, PA Chimney Cleaning Company
Do you have a fireplace? If so, there’s no doubt that it’s a favorite feature of your Bucks County home. There’s nothing better than gathering with your loved ones or cozying up with a good book in front of a warm, roaring fire. In order to ensure your fireplace remains a beloved feature, however, the chimney needs to be properly maintained, and that includes regular cleaning.
Whether your fires are slow to burn, just won’t seem to take, or are producing a lot of smoke, you’re hearing strange banging or scurrying sounds and you suspect animals are nesting inside the chimney, the damper is giving you trouble, or you just haven’t had it cleaned in a long time (or maybe never); whatever, the case may be, if you’re in need of chimney cleaning near you, you want to be sure that you find the best company for the job.
Finding a chimney sweep isn’t hard; just search for “chimney cleaning near me”, “chimney sweep near me”, or another similar term on Google, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, or whatever your preferred search engine maybe, you’re bound to find a long list of results. What is hard, however, is finding a reputable company that you can count on to deliver outstanding results. That’s why, instead of hiring the first company you find, you should get in touch with a few different companies to determine which one will best suit your needs.
When you’re interviewing prospective Southampton, PA chimney cleaning professionals, by asking some key questions, you’ll be able to narrow down the choices and find the right company that specializes in chimney cleaning near you. Here’s a look at some key questions to consider asking prospective chimney sweeps.
Are you certified?
If you want to be sure that you’re hiring a knowledgeable and experienced chimney sweep, be sure to find out if the Southampton, PA chimney cleaning professionals you’re thinking about hiring are certified. There are several professional organizations that chimney sweeps can receive certifications from, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) being the most prominent.
In order to become certified by the CSIA, a chimney sweep must successfully complete a multi-faceted training program and pass comprehensive exams. A certification with the CSIA confirms that a Southampton, PA chimney cleaning professional has the knowledge and experience that’s needed to properly and thoroughly clean chimneys and fireplaces.
Are you insured?
You want to be sure that the Southampton, PA chimney cleaning company you hire is fully insured. In Bucks County, chimney sweeps must carry liability insurance, and if they have a crew, they must have workers’ compensation coverage, too. In the event that something goes wrong – your property is damaged or the chimney sweep is injured, for example – a Southampton, PA chimney cleaning company’s insurance will cover the cost of any necessary repairs or medical care that may be required.
Don’t just ask each of the chimney sweepers you speak with if they’re insured; ask to see proof of their coverage and check to make sure that their policies are valid. Any reputable company that offers chimney cleaning near you will be more than happy to share this information with you. If they aren’t willing to, consider that a red flag and cross them off your list.
How long have you been cleaning chimneys?
While it’s true that a chimney sweep that’s just getting started may be able to provide reliable results, there’s something to be said about the experience. The longer a Southampton, PA chimney cleaning company has been in business, the better, as they’ll have more experience under their belts and they’ll bring that experience to your project.
Cleaning a chimney is a complicated job. The right tools and equipment need to be used, the appropriate strategies have to be employed, and the professional needs to know how to identify and navigate issues. An experienced chimney sweep will be more knowledgeable and will have more hands-on experience. Plus, when a company is well-established and has a long-standing history serving the Bucks County community, that’s a sign that they provide reliable results, otherwise they wouldn’t be in business for long.
Do you offer written estimates?
While you want to be sure that you’re hiring a highly knowledgeable, experienced, certified, and insured Southampton, PA chimney cleaning professional, you also want to be sure that you hire someone who offers fair and affordable services. Reliable chimney sweeps will offer written estimates that detail the services that are included and a structured breakdown of the cost of each service and the total cost for the project.
If a company doesn’t offer a written estimate but says they’ll provide a verbal price quote, you should be hesitant about moving forward. Not only do you want a detailed estimate in writing so that you can compare those estimates and determine who will work for your budget, but when you do decide on a company to hire, you want to be sure you have a written estimate that you can compare the final bill to; otherwise, you could end up being charged more than you bargained for.
Do you have references I can contact?
Last but certainly not least, you should ask the companies that specialize in chimney cleaning near you if they have references you can contact. A credible Southampton, PA chimney cleaning professional will be more than happy to provide you with a list of clients they have served. Take the time to get in touch with each of the references to find out what type of services the company provided, if they were satisfied with the results and if they would recommend using the company.
If any of the chimney sweepers you speak with won’t provide references, or they do, but you have a hard time getting in touch with them, proceed with caution. A reliable company will offer references that they have confirmed you can speak with.

Southampton is an unincorporated community in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, situated in the southeastern tip of Bucks County.
Southampton, Pennsylvania is a namesake of Southampton, England, from where the followers of William Penn set sail to the Province of Pennsylvania. By 1685, Southampton was recognized by the Provincial Council as a township, and the lands within its borders had been allocated to thirteen original purchasers: John Luff, John Martin, Robert Pressmore, Richard Wood, John Jones, Mark Betres, John Swift, Enoch Flowers, Joseph Jones, Thomas Groom, Robert Marsh, Thomas Hould and John Gilbert, whose tracts were delineated on a Map of the Improved Part of the Province of Pennsylvania, drafted by Thomas Holme, Pennsylvania’s Surveyor General.
Southampton’s boundaries at that time extended eastward to Bensalem, and it was not until 1929 that the township was divided into ‘Upper Southampton’ and ‘Lower Southampton’. Its immediate bordering towns are now Feasterville, Huntingdon Valley, Warminster, and Churchville.
In order to ensure peaceful coexistence with the Indians residing in this region, Penn purchased the land with wampum and other valuable commodities including items of clothing, fish hooks, axes, knives and other useful tools. The area between the Pennypack and Neshaminy Creeks, encompassing Southampton Township, was conveyed by the Lenni-Lenape Chief Tamanend to William Penn by Deed dated June 23, 1683.
